Such a Long Journey (1998)

Such a Long Journey is a 1998 Indo-Canadian drama directed by Sturla Gunnarsson, based on Rohinton Mistry’s acclaimed novel. Set in Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1971, the film follows Gustad Noble (Roshan Seth), a Parsi bank clerk whose life unravels amidst political turmoil and personal crises. His son, Sohrab (Vrajesh Hirjee), refuses to attend the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, while his daughter, Roshan (Shazneed Damania), falls ill. Gustad’s entanglement in a covert government operation, initiated by his old friend Major Jimmy Bilimoria (Naseeruddin Shah), further complicates his life.

Pearl Padamsee portrays Mrs. Kutpitia, a superstitious neighbour who influences Gustad’s wife, Dilnavaz (Soni Razdan), leading to tensions within the family. The film also features Om Puri as Ghulam Mohamed, a mysterious intermediary, and Kurush Deboo as Tehmul, a mentally challenged man who shares a special bond with Gustad.

Such a Long Journey received critical acclaim for its portrayal of a man’s struggle amidst societal and familial upheavals.
