West Is West is a 1987 indie romantic comedy directed by David Rathod. The film follows Vikram (Ashutosh Gowariker), a charming yet broke Indian émigré from Bombay who arrives in San Francisco with dreams of studying at UC Berkeley. When his plans fall apart, he meets Sue (Heidi Carpenter), a punk rocker and horror movie theater employee. As Vikram’s visa nears expiration, he resorts to increasingly desperate and humorous measures to stay in the U.S., including a spontaneous wedding and a botched burglary.

Pearl Padamsee plays Mrs. Shah, a hotel owner who becomes involved in Vikram’s schemes. The film is noted for its quirky humor, cross-cultural themes, and a memorable scene where Bollywood music unexpectedly becomes a hit at a punk party.
